This project targets farmers adjacent to the Kibaale-Itwara – Matiri elephant corridor in Kyenjojo district. The project seeks to build the capacity of farmers adjacent to Itwara and Matiri central forest reserve (CFR) to adopt restoration practices for the degraded elephant corridor using agroforestry approaches. Among the key activities are the establishment of tree nursery beds to raise some tree species for the promotion of agro-forestry farming, improved household income, and household food security.

JESE has secured financial support from Iles De Paix (IDP) to implement a 5 years program the Mpanga Super Farmers Program+ SIA 2. The program is being implemented in the Rwenzori region in the areas of Kabambiro in Kamwenge district and Kicwamba Sub-county in Kabarole district and Fort portal city.

Mpanga Super Farmers Program is built on the foundation of Agroecology which looks onto sustainable food systems in these areas. The program aims to strike the equilibrium between the economic, social, and environmental aspects of family farmers.

The program will also work with five schools in Fort portal city on promoting nutritional education, and the environment and demonstrating on agroecology and safe and healthy foods among selected primary schools.

JESE with support from BD to implement a five-year program dubbed Sustainable Family Farm Development 2. The program is inspired by Agroecology. It envisages building resilient and sustainable family farms. The program will also focus on advocacy for the integration of agroecology in government policies and plans, and promoting gender equality. In order to achieve this, two approaches will be employed including Integrated farm planning and Participatory Action Research.

Project Objectives 

  1. Family farmers progressively adopt an agroecology approach and apply evidence-based advocacy taking into account all family members’ aspirations.
  2.  Local governments adopt and actively promote Agroecology (as the way forward to sustainable livelihoods.
  3. Women and girls, men and boys in communities increase collective decision-making processes at household and community levels.

Project Goal: To facilitate 500 family farmers and youth in Kamwenge District to achieve sustainable and dignified livelihoods and actively participate in the decision-making process at the farm level, in their communities, and from local to national levels.

The project “Skill Up!” is funded by the BMZ and aims at contributing to a better socio-economic status of vulnerable youth ages 18-30 by providing them with technical, business, and life skills in different trades. The vocational training is carried out in hairdressing, tailoring, motor vehicle and motorcycle mechanics, bricklaying and concrete practice, welding, and carpentry. It always takes place in selected enterprises located in the four operation areas; Rwimi, Kibiito, Kyenjojo, and Fort Portal Tourism City, where the trainees work Monday to Saturday, with the exception of one day of “life skills training”.

The training consists of 6 months of practical training and 2 months of grace period; it started on November 16th, 2022 and currently consists of around 230 trainees. After the training, the trainees get the chance to acquire a certificate from the Directorate of Industry Training (DIT). Even before the end of the training, the trainees are able to produce quality products or provide their services. It is amazing to see their technical skills develop and their personalities flourish.

Project Title: Growing inclusive green entrepreneurship in the Kibale, Itwara, and Matiri Forest landscape, western Uganda.

Growing inclusive green entrepreneurship is a 4-year project implemented in Kibale, Itwara, and Matiri Forest landscapes, in western Uganda. The project aims at revitalizing rural communities and increasing their resilience to climate and other external shocks through a nature-based model for green job creation, innovation, and entrepreneurship that protects and restores land and ecosystem services by establishing an innovative community Information and Alert system which enables upgrade in climate resilience and productivity in agroforestry systems, developing a replicable bottom up, green community entrepreneurship model and generate businesses, income, and decent jobs, integrating green community entrepreneurship model and climate-smart agroforestry courses /skills in local green college curricula and replicating them  in rural communities in the wider target areas

Strengthening Resilience through enhanced Local Disaster Risk Management Capacities (DRR) is a two and half year project implemented by Oxfam, JESE, AND CSBAG in Isingiro and Kyegeggwa with support from European Union Trust Fund. The project aims at Rehabilitating and managing Natural Resources and the environment sustainably, inclusively, and protected in Isingiro and Kyegegwa Districts thus promoting social cohesion between the host population and refugees.

With a focus on Sustainable land use management plans development, and environmental restoration activities undertaken through rehabilitation, afforestation, and sustainable management, the project has so far established of 37.5ha of woodlots in both isingiro and Kyegeggwa districts. The project has also promoted environmentally friendly energy conservation techniques in institution and Household through construction of energy saving stoves. Formed and trained twenty-four (24) natural resources/ environment committees in local governments and areas where woodlots have been established. About the project

Green College Initiative (GCI) is a three-year project implemented by JESE, SATNET and KIIMA FOODS in the Rwenzori region with support from Welthungerhilfe and BMZ. The project seeks to train young people in Green Trades at Green Colleges involving relevant actors from the education and private sector. With a keen focus on building Green Trades’ relevant skills through a network of partners, GCI has supported rural out-of-school youth in the Rwenzori region to acquire employable and marketable skills towards reducing poverty among young people and creating new sustainable work opportunities.

Objective of the project

The overall objective of the project is to improve the employability and income level of youth through promoting vocational training in Green skills. The project focuses on training rural youth in order to give them a dignified livelihood within their own community.

Project achievements

  • During the 03 years, 749 successfully completed technical skills training
  • 251 youths were assessed for the Workers PAS certificate offered by the Directorate of industrial training(DIT)
  • 749 graduates awarded certificates of completion offered by green colleges in partnership with the project
  • 395 individuals and 06 business groups were supported with tools for business. ( these include tools for business for example solar dryers, Wheelbarrows, bicycles, barbed wires, tapelines, buckets, iron sheets, tanks, business advisory services, and mentorship programs to the graduates of green colleges.

The youth who were trained in tailoring by JESE under the Skill Up! Project have received sewing machines to help them start their own businesses. The distribution started on Friday, December 16, 2022, and a total of 60 sewing machines will be distributed to beneficiaries in Fort Portal City, Kyenjojo and Bunyangabu.

Phiona Karungi, the Skill Up! Project Officer for Fort Portal City said by design, Skill Up! graduates receive startup kits to ensure they get self-employed immediately after the training.  For the case of those trained in tailoring, each graduate receives a full kit of a sewing machine.

Rose Kaligirwa, one of the beneficiaries from Kazingo in North Division, Fort Portal, said she will use the machine to earn an income that will sustain her family.

“I can now make school uniforms, pillow cases and Bitenge very well. I have been hiring a sewing machine and in a month, I have been saving at least Shs 100,000 after meeting all my other costs. With my own machine now, I will be in position to make some good money that can help me look after myself and my child,” she said.

Immaculate Komuhimbo, another youth and beneficiary from Gweri in North Division, Fort Portal, said before the training, she was a brick layer. She added that she did a lot of other odd jobs, but is now happy that she is getting into a decent job that that is also profitable.

Resty Ngonzi from Kidudu village in Nyantungo Sub county in Kyenjojo district said she dropped out of school from S.2 due to lack school fees. She then hunted for odd jobs but in vain before she gave birth to a baby. She promised to use the machine to get money, support her schooling siblings and also look after herself and her baby.

Francis Alijuna, the Fort Portal Central Division Community Development Officer (CDO) appreciated JESE and the partners for the SkillUp! Project, saying it is adding on the government efforts to fight youth unemployment.  He encouraged the beneficiaries to ensure they utilise the machines and improve on their livelihood.

The Kyenjojo Town Council Mayor, Geoffrey Kagoro Businge, told the trainees to be trustworthy and adopt the culture of saving.

“So, my dear youth, learn how to save. Imagine saving Shs 2,000 per day! That would be Shs 60,000 amonth, and in a year, that would be a lot of money. So please, take saving very serious as you do your tailoring work,” Businge said.

To ensure the machines are not misused, Karungi said each beneficiary signed a Memorandum of Understanding with JESE, which partly said that the Sewing Machine remains a property of JESE for one year and will be monitored regularly.

“If we find that the machine is with a different person or is idle, we shall pick it and give it to another person,” Karungi said.

Additionally, the sewing machines have been labelled so that they can easily be identified in case they are sold or stolen.
