About the project

Green College Initiative (GCI) is a three-year project implemented by JESE, SATNET and KIIMA FOODS in the Rwenzori region with support from Welthungerhilfe and BMZ. The project seeks to train young people in Green Trades at Green Colleges involving relevant actors from the education and private sector. With a keen focus on building Green Trades’ relevant skills through a network of partners, GCI has supported rural out-of-school youth in the Rwenzori region to acquire employable and marketable skills towards reducing poverty among young people and creating new sustainable work opportunities.

Areas of operation 

Kabarole and Bunyangabu districts (Sub counties: Kicwamba, Karangura, Kasenda, Harugongo, central and North division, Kateebwa, Kyamukube town council, Kiiko town council, Rutete, and Kisomolo

Objective of the project

The overall objective of the project is to improve the employability and income level of youth through promoting vocational training in Green skills. The project focuses on training rural youth in order to give them a dignified livelihood within their own community.

Project achievements

  • During the 03 years, 749 successfully completed technical skills training
  • 251 youths were assessed for the Workers PAS certificate offered by the Directorate of industrial training(DIT)
  • 749 graduates awarded certificates of completion offered by green colleges in partnership with the project
  • 395 individuals and 06 business groups were supported with tools for business. ( these include tools for business for example solar dryers, Wheelbarrows, bicycles, barbed wires, tapelines, buckets, iron sheets, tanks, business advisory services, and mentorship programs to the graduates of green colleges.
